The Role of Trajectory in Memory Seating Functions

A basic power seating system (even one with recline, tilt, and sit-to-stand) may not be suitable for many individuals due to range of motion, pain, or health needs. These users require a more specialized series of seat movements (i.e., "kinematics") for safe and comfortable use. If there is not good biomechanical alignment with the seat because of the intermediate positions when moving between seating positions, the effect of having power seating could be harmful rather than beneficial.

Sabet et al., are leaders in this area and substantiate the mantra that mobility is a human right. Assistive devices may enhance a child's ability to move and provide opportunity for learning and development. There is a plethora of commercially available equipment. Programs such as gobabygo and other initiatives may provide resources for DIY methods to adapt toys or create systems for children.

Side Stepping and Suspended Walking Using a Gait Trainer Enhances Walking Ability

Willow is working hard on her hip muscle strength in therapy sessions, at home, and at school, but can find it challenging. In therapy sessions, she works with her physical therapist on activities such as side-stepping in the parallel bars but needs hands-on guidance to achieve the correct movement. Her physical therapist thought using the side-stepping feature of the Leckey MyWay+ would enable Willow to work on her muscle strength independently while being properly supported by the chest harness.

The presentation focused on personalizing wheelchair configuration to optimize posture, propulsion, and function.
