Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The degeneration of the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord leads to the loss of the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement, which results in paralysis and eventually leads to death.
